Exploring Emerging Technologies: Blockchain and its Impact on the Digital World đź’ˇ
“Software is eating the world”― Marc Andreessen
Blockchain technology is revolutionizing the digital landscape as we know it, going beyond cryptocurrencies to reshape various aspects of the internet. With the emergence of virtual currencies, NFTs (digital assets), DAOs, and digital wallets, we are witnessing the dawn of a new era in technology.
And of course, if I’m going to write on blockchain technology I have to talk a little about Web 3.0. It’s been around since 2006. However, it wasn’t as relevant back then as it is today.
Web 3.0, a phrase coined by John Markoff of the New York Times in 2006, refers to a supposed third generation of Internet-based services that collectively comprise what might be called 'the Intelligent Web'--such as those using semantic Web, microformats, natural language search, data mining, machine learning, recommendation agents, and artificial intelligence technologies.
One of the key features of Web 3.0 is its decentralized nature. Unlike Web 2.0, where data is stored on centralized servers controlled by large corporations, Web 3.0 relies on a network of interconnected nodes, each storing a copy of the data. This makes it more difficult for data to be tampered with or censored, as there is no single point of failure.
The important stuff 🔦
1 The companies of tomorrow
DAOs ( Decentralized autonomous organizations )
DAOs are decentralized collective entities powered by smart contracts. They represent a new type of internet-native company that challenges traditional business models. DAOs have no need for bank accounts, as they have an online treasury (digital bank vault) embedded in their code.
They are probably one of the most exciting things about Web 3 right now. I mean come on 🤷🏿‍♂️, these things don’t even need bank accounts. Instead, they have an online treasury ( digital bank vault ) built right into its code. Let’s look at a crazy example below.
Constitution DAO
Some members of the crypto community banded together to form a DAO to purchase a copy of the US Constitution it was all done in under a week. Too bad they were outbid though. They were able to raise over 40 million USD in ETH!
Part 2 —
The End
They may be a little difficult to understand now, but DAOs might be the future of, scaled, remote human coordination. There’s no telling what you’ll be able to do with your own DAO. I’d encourage you to
2 Distribution of digital wealth
The current internet landscape, built upon open protocols, has primarily benefitted large corporations. However, blockchain technology is shifting the distribution of digital wealth. Users and creators can now own a piece of the pie, and the slices are quite large.
Example
Ethereum Name Service ( ENS ) — is a lookup system, it links information to a name. It is meant to work alongside DNS ( Domain Name System ). DNS is a similar system used to find info on the web.
The team behind ENS “airdropped” ( sending coins to wallet addresses ) its users with ENS tokens for being a part of the system. They also issued the token for governance in its new DAO structure.
ENS is just one example of how wealth distribution on the web is being redefined today.
3 Transforming Monetary Systems: Decentralized Finance (DeFi)
As software continues to eat the world, decentralized finance (DeFi) is disrupting traditional finance (TradFi). DeFi covers a range of financial services and applications built on public blockchain networks.
Decentralized finance, is a blanket term used to cover the broad financial services and applications that operate on top of public blockchain networks. It is highly likely that DeFi will uproot most, if not all of traditional finance. Here are some advantages of DeFi:
- Permissionless
- Open
- Transparent
Uniswap — is an automated decentralized exchange ( dex ) on the Ethereum blockchain network. The protocol facilitates the exchange of ERC-20 tokens.
Conclusion
We are in the midst of a massive technological revolution akin to the birth of the internet. It is crucial to learn about and engage with these emerging technologies to stay ahead of the curve. As an early adopter, you can be a part of the change and contribute to shaping the future of the digital world.🔥
